She was very friendly and cool. About an hour into the conversation, my good friend pulled me aside and told me (word of mouth) of her bad reputation as a slut. By hearing this, I looked at this girl in a different way because WOM influenced my perception of her. It turns out that you can visually see this girls reputation eroding online, through a very harsh website called Juicy Campus, which reveals college gossip and students login anonymously. I observed the various comments left by men at Bentley and then some of her friends who left opposing comments to balance off the argument. The end result is that online reputation catastrophe was established in reality, but now is known by a good portion of the student body because of this website. This is WOM 2.0! What is WOM? Word of mouth (WOM) is how messages travel from one person to the next, creating a viral effect. When it comes to marketing, you want people to say good things about your brand because their endorsement counts more than your own. When something is considered buzz-worthy, it means that people are more likely to share it with friends and their friends and so on. This is very important for brands because they get viewed by more people, with no additional cost. The average tech embracing youth has 94 phone numbers in his or her mobile phone, has 78 people on an instant messenger buddy list, and has 86 people in his or her social community (Circuits of Cool/Digital Playground Study). 83% of tech embracing youth visit a majority of websites because of links sent from friends (Circuits of Cool/Digital Playground Study). 59% of college students pick word of mouth as their preferred method for learning about new products and services (eMarketer). WOM 1.0 vs 2.0 To get a full glimpse of how WOM has changed, Im going to compare it to how the web has changed, as well as our brands. The 1.0 version was very rigid, strict and confined. Web 1.0 was an web filled with static pages. Me 1.0 was when you had to hide behind your corporation. WOM 1.0 was when it was hard to trace conversations because they were spoken in real world environments, mostly behind your back. The 2.0 version is very open, loud and scattered. Web 2.0 is the rise of two way communication online. Me 2.0 is when you are able to stand in front of your corporation. WOM 2.0 is where conversations are brought online and they are observable through blogs, social networks, etc. How word of mouth can spread Lets say that a random blogger makes fun of you in a post. Even if he or she had five RSS subscribers, one of them can then Tweet the article. From that single Tweet, someone bookmarks it on del.icio.us. That bookmark gets Stumbled 100 times and then winds up on Digg. It finally makes the Digg homepage and someone on YouTube makes a video about it, which winds up on the homepage, in front of thousands of eyes. The New York Times decides to run a story on it. What you can do about it 1. Monitor: Use reputation management tools in order to find out what people are saying about you online. Try your hardest to stop bad press before it travels. 2. Self-awareness: You should start being more aware of how you act in an online and offline setting. If you can pay more attention to how youre responding to others, less negative and more positive WOM should spread. 3. Produce: Instead of being just a content consumer, be a producer. Most jobs are creative, if you are creative Even though its not cool to complain about your job in a recession, people do. And one of the most common complaints I hear is that the job isnt creative enough. But most of the lack of creativity people pin on their jobs really comes from inside themselves. Creative thinkers approach whatever they do painting, sculpture or business with innovative ideas. Are you really as creative as you say you are? Heres a quick checklist: creative people have high standards, inherent intensity, and an obsession with coming up with something new. If you are a creative person who complains about being stifled in the business world, unleash your creativity on business problems, and you are likely to be happier in your job and promoted more often. Business building is inherently creative, and people who get to the top are people who consistently think of creative solutions for business problems. Think of your favorite strategy games they all involve creative thinking. Business is just like those games; if you approach a problem in a different way from your competitors, you are more likely to pull ahead. Think about Bill Gates he realized that he could take other peoples products and market the products more creatively than the original producer. Or how about David Neeleman at Jet Blue? He approached customer satisfaction differently than all the other airlines, and surprise: People want leather seats more than they want bad airline food. But dont forget to be practical in your creative thinking. If you dont want to be practical, you should be a visual artist. But let me tell you something you get paid a hell of a lot more for creativity in the business world than you do in the art world. The good thing is that the two are very closely linked. The current exhibit at the Plus Ultra gallery in New York is a great example of this link. The economy is bad, and the art world is hit hard because when theres recession you focus on your mortgage not your art dealer. So this gallery is showing works by the Jani Leinonen. He has developed his own business model for the art world: Pay per view. Each painting is covered with a specially treated frosted glass. You put your money in the vending machine slot next to the painting and then the frost dissipates and you see the art. If Leinonen were in corporate America, his boss would praise him for using technology to develop a new business model for a stale market. Think of yourself as an artist at the office; notice that each business problem begs for creativity. And be happy that you have health benefits and vacation days, which you wouldnt if you showed your solutions in galleries instead of conference rooms. Some people will say, My boss doesnt want any creativity. Before you say that, consider that maybe what your boss doesnt like is outlandish, shoot-from-the-hip suggestions for difficult problems or worse yet, risky solutions to unimportant problems. But maybe it is true, that your boss does not appreciate creativity. Its probably because he is scared of risk and change. And that fear is the first problem you must solve with your new, creative approach to your job.

If youre in a bad mood, you should pretend to be happy, and that will make you happier for real. You should force a smile, force yourself to focus on the positive, chat with others in a friendly way or similar. Its often called fake it till you make it. I honestly dont believe thats how it works, and now theres some evidence to support this view: scientists tracked a group of bus drivers for two weeks, focusing on them because their jobs require frequent, and generally courteous, interactions with many people. The scientists examined what happened when the drivers engaged in fake smiling, known as ?surface acting? After following the drivers closely, the researchers found that on days when the smiles were forced, the subjects? moods deteriorated and they tended to withdraw from work. Trying to suppress negative thoughts, it turns out, may have made those thoughts even more persistent. So what does work? Finding actual (you might say real) reasons to be happy: on days when the subjects tried to display smiles through deeper efforts ? by actually cultivating pleasant thoughts and memories ? their overall moods improved and their productivity increased. So if youre having a crappy day at work dont just fake happiness find reasons to be happy. And if that doesnt work, go ahead and have a crappy day.
