The background check revealed a criminal record and hard time in a penitentiary. When Rosen asked the woman about it, she said her husband had beaten her, repeatedly. So she shot him - a crime for which she spent seven years behind bars.Rosens jaw hit the floor. And yet, Rosen recommended hiring her.It turned out beautifully, Rosen said. The woman is still working at the plant today. Shes one of the organizations best workers, grateful just to have been given a chance.Its an extreme case. Many people have issues theyd rather sweep under the carpet than reveal on a resume - from work-history gemeinsame agrarpolitiks to degrees not received to an age thats either too ripe or too raw to admit. But all resume issues have one thing in common Getting caught in a lie about them can obliterate your chances of getting hired.Its going to be discovered. If it gets discovered, or when, there will be no chance youll get that job, said Rosen, who is now human resources director for Schiller International University in Largo, Fla. Theyre looking for (an applicant) in his 40s or early 50s.Similarly, applicants in their 50s can face prejudice concerning older workers and their presumed inflexibility regarding salary, learning new technology or being managed by a younger person.When to date yourselfBurdan himself was once a recruiter and admits that checking on college dates is the first thing hed do when reviewing an application. Id take the hard resume copy and go immediately to the col lege (dates) to figure out how old they are, he said.Now that hes a resume writer, Burdan handles resume dates differently depending on where a job seeker is in her career path. If a job seeker has had only three operations jobs in her career and received a degree in 1988, Burdan will include the college dates to signal how old the subject is. If the subject is in his early 60s or 70s, Burdan excludes college dates completely.The point isnt to lie, Burdan said the point is to throw (employers) off the trail as long as possible. An employer will eventually find out a candidates age. But the longer it takes for that to happen, the less time there is for that employer to rule somebody out due to preconceptions about their age, and the mora time there is for a candidate to get into an interview and to build a relationship with her interviewers.But be forewarned Recruiters know what youre up to when youre cagey with dates, and leaving them off can set off alarms. Dates (are) something ve ry critical to have on your resume, said Jacqueline Hudson, a senior account executive for the Renascent Group LLC, an executive search firm. I totally understand age discrimination, but (if dates arent included) automatically (a recruiter will think), What are they hiding? Are they too junior or are they too senior? Dates of employmentWhile leaving off education dates clearly has its pluses and minuses, leaving off work history dates is never a good idea. Recruiters like to see how long a candidate stayed with an employer and, specifically, how many years of experience they have in a given role. If they list five jobs with no dates, we dont know if they spent 25 years at one job and one with another, Hudson said. (Dates) show consistency and what your (work history) pattern is. Nobody wants to hire somebody who will turn around and work for someone else in less than a year.For those worried about a short tenure at a job, contemporary wisdom dictates eliminating months and including only years for job history dates.Work history Bottom LineIt is acceptable to omit work experience, or limit details, after 10 to 12 years.Dont cover gaps by extending your tenure at previous positions.Fill in gaps with consulting and volunteer positions or list the reasons for the unemployment (e.g. a sabbatical, family leave or maternity leave).If you began your professional career in 1974, are you required to fill several pages with technology jobs, promotions and duties dating back 35 years?No. Convention in the resume industry s include a retirement that was cut short due to a nose-diving 401K plan childbirth or family issues a sabbatical or a return to school to pursue a degree.Candidates often write whats known as a functional resume to try to cover up such gaps. In a functional resume, company names and job accomplishments are provided without dates.Dont do it. When looking at a functional resume, hiring professionals cant tell when or where a given accomplishment happened, and it will signal to most hiring managers that a job seeker is trying to hide something.I think thats a big mistake, Van Vreede said. Right off the bat, youre making people worry about you. And if worried enough, theyll leave you out of consideration.Fill in the gapBe forthright by documenting all work-history gaps just as you would a job, said several certified professional resume writers. For example, if you took a sabbatical from 2001 to 2003, include that information on your resume, with sabbatical in all capital and/or bold letters, just as if it were a company name.That way, (the gap is) right up front, addressed and filled in for the hiring manager whos just looking at the dates, Van Vreede said. It gets you through the human resources screen, but you wont be accused of trying to hide anything. And in todays environment, a lot of people have gaps on their resumes.Case in point Schiller International Universitys Rosen reviewed a resume in mid-July that included a gap in empl oyment, but the applicant had been clear that the gap was due to time spent as a stay-at-home mother. Well, thats fine, Rosen said. That was explained. But the other point is, especially these days, losing a job is not a black eye anymore. At one point, if you got laid off, people thought there was something wrong with you. Nowadays if you lose your job, its no big deal.Explain the gapRosen is also understanding of work histories that are somewhat inconsistent, as long as the inconsistencies are explainable. He talked to another job seeker in mid-July who had been at one job for a long time, followed by short tenures at two companies - a potential red flag from a recruiters perspective. The candidate explained that he had moved on from the long-term position to a new one, but left because of a disagreement with a supervisor. He had then moved into a position in the mortgage industry, but lost his job in the early days of the recession. Thats OK, Rosen said. They were at one job for 18, 20 years - thats OK. Thats a reasonable explanation. It really is.Certified professional resume writers Van Vreede and Burdan recommend that job seekers fill in gaps on their resumes resulting from layoffs with any consulting, freelance or contract work completed. Include pro bono or volunteer work, as well.For those who have done nothing since losing a job, putting nothing down can work if there have been only a few months of downtime. If youve done nothing for more than six months, youre getting to the point where people will start to worry. However, unemployment remains common enough in this economy that it should not automatically disqualify a job seeker.Job titles Bottom lineInsert the official title(s) used by your previous employer(s) on your resume.When it comes to job titles, there is no way around the truth. Certified professional resume writers say you must always be honest because titles are easily verified by reference and background checks.By default, you should provide the title referred to by the employer, said Burdan. Companies like the Big Five, theyll have titles like senior auditor. You have to go along with that, he said, even if that title has an unclear meaning out of context. Instead, he advises using a title such as principal.The rationale boils down to perception Theres a big difference between being the president of a one-person company and being the president of General Electric, and, in most cases, its wise to dial it back to avoid being seen as exaggerating your role, he said.Burdan also suggests translating or converting titles of candidates who have military or government experience, given that titles such as colonel, major or agent in charge dont have clear meaning within the business community.Education Bottom lineNever claim a degree or certificate you do not possess.Never falsify or round up a GPA.Accu-Screen, a company that specializes in employment background checks, has found during the course of tracking 15 years worth of screens that some 16 percent of academic degrees and institutions listed on resumes are falsified. Job seek ers also falsify 15 percent of technical skills and certifications, Accu-Screen has found.Many job candidates who have gone to college but havent graduated lie by saying that theyve completed a degree. Resume writers also often find such candidates using qualifying language such as only four credits left to get a Bachelor of Science degree.Both tactics are huge mistakes, said Van Vreede. Any reasonable person will look at the candidate and say, Are you stupid? Why didnt you go back and finish your degree? Go back and take correspondence courses online I did it and got a degree. What are you waiting for? he said.More to the point, language tricks send up red flags, giving the impression that a job seeker is trying to be sneaky. A better approach than lying or manipulating language is to say that you attended a program or did coursework at a given institution.Heres another technique that resume writer Burdan uses For those who have college degrees, he labels the appropriate section E ducation. For those who lack degrees, he bundles their education up in a section he labels Professional Training.In a Professional Training section, Burdan will state, for example, that a subject has completed three years of a Bachelor of Science in finance program at the University of Georgia.By labeling it Professional Training, it appears less like an aborted degree and more like continuing education. For somebody not to have a college degree is rarer today, and that makes it best to draw attention away from the hole, Burdan said.CertificationsTechnical certifications represent a special case.One field wherein which it is common to find faked certifications is the technology industry. According to the report, people in income brackets between $40,000 and $80,000 were seen by the majority of respondents to be “neither rich nor poor,” but somewhere in the middle.Perhaps the best testament to this category is data about those who make $40,000 a year. Sixty-six percent of respondents thought Americans with that level of earnings were neither rich nor poor. ACORN has been working with industrial partners to develop and market the new coatings and NASA also wants to commercialize its coating. In the meantime, big offshore projects are being built using the best of conventional TSA coatings. A joint venture of Germanys E.ON and Norways Statoil is building a 385-MW wind project in Baltic Sea, comprised of 60, 6-MW turbines installed on mono pile foundations in depths of 23 to 27 meters. Working with its engineers and partners, E.ON developed an automated coating line at a fabrication yard in Rostock to build the giant monopiles. E.ON officials claim it is the first fully automated coating line, handling piles with a maximum length of 81 meters and a diameter of up to 8 meters. After expanding existing coating halls, thermally sprayed aluminum was applied using a robot with two arc burners that sprayed a 350-micrometer-thick coating on the piles. The second step applied a sealing coat of resin. E.ON also claims it is the first time the process has been applied on an industrial scale. Previous TSA applications were used on smaller steel components that were submerged or on larger components above the water line. As the smart-TSA coatings are commercialized, researchers believe it will boost environmental protection while lowering overall costs, increasingthe competiveness of the offshore renewable energy and furthering the rollout of additional offshore technologies because of a longer lifespan. It was a clear night toward the end of July when he took a minute to stare at the Moon. There are three men up there right now, he thought in wonderment, and two of them are actually on its surface. We put them there, and we returned them home safely, he said to himself. We did it. Kachmar was not only thinking of the countrys achievement, but also of the 400,000 engineers, technicians, and scientists who worked on the Apollo Program during the span of its 14-year run. Fifty years after Apollo 11 successfully put the first men on the Moon, engineers who worked on the mission say their feeling of pride, awe, and accomplishment are stronger than ever. Kachmars certainly is. When I was there working on it, it was more like, Weve got a job to do, were engineers, we can get the job done,? said Kachmar, who joined the lab, now called Draper Laboratory, in 1965 and helped to develop the algorithms and crew procedures for the Apollo Rendezvous System, used to guide the lunar module from the command module to the moons surface, and back. Many worked alongside older engineers, stars in their fields, who dropped their egos to help a young colleague solve a problem and do the job right. They entered with the fundamentals of their education and left with a new set of knowledge, skills, and confidence that no school or other job could offer. Galvanized, they all strove toward achieving a national goalnot one based on killing an enemy but on advancing humanitythat most of the world also embraced. And together, from the July 16 launch of the Saturn V rocket to the astronauts safe return on July 24, they celebrated the accomplishments that made Apollo 11 one giant leap for mankind. I cried and I cried, said Anthony Cacioppo, remembering the Apollo 11 milestones he watched with his colleagues at the former Grumman Aircraft headquarters in Bethpage, N.Y. Cacioppo, a member of ASMEs Long Island section, worked from 1965 to 1970 as an intern at Grumman while studying for his engineering degree at Pratt Institute. And today I still cry about that experience, he said, unable to hold back the tears. It was a wonderful experience. In 1962, the company beat out nine others for the sole contract to design and build the Apollo Lunar Excursion Module, later shortened to lunar module and typically referred to as the lem. Until the program ended, more than 3,000 engineers and 7,000 other Grumman employees hand-built 13 full versions of it. For any engineer or technician, especially a young intern, the company was a special place to work, offering a goldmine of opportunity. It was a gift, a privilege, said Cacioppo, who worked on packaging new honeycomb sandwich materials, cable systems used to move the astronauts around during simulations, and instrumentation and environmental controls, among other areas. Photo: NASA The lunar module (LM) is still considered one of the worlds most important engineering achievements and remains the only crewed vehicle to land beyond the Earth. Designed for lunar orbit rendezvous, it sat directly beneath the command and service module (CSM) that rode atop the Saturn V rocket. Once parked in lunar orbit, the Apollo LM-5 Eagle, separated from the CSM and carried two astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, to the Moons surface during the 24-hour landing mission that began shortly after 1 pm on July 20. A third astronaut, Michael Collins, remained in the CSM. After collecting soil samples and performing environmental tests, the astronauts flew the LM back to the CSM, where they re-boarded and discarded the module. Overseen by Grumman aerospace engineer Thomas Kelly, almost every element of its design, construction, and testing pushed and expanded the limits of multiple engineering disciplines. The team developed and incorporated novel lightweight materials and cutting edge electrical, communication, navigation, and computer hardware and software systems. We were developing technology that had never been used before, Cacioppo said at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, N.Y., where he and other Grummanites recently met to reminisce about their experience. Several of those engineers volunteer as guides at the museum, which houses many exhibits based on the LM and includes one of the last built for the program. Talk about an adventure. Thats part of the legacy that I look back on. In its heyday during World War II and the Cold War, Grummans aircraft and other products were so well built the company earned the nickname the Grumman Iron Works. The LM was no exception, proving to be one of the most consistently reliable of the Apollo mission vehicles. Ed Lee, a thermal engineer who helped forge the iron at Grumman, witnessed the LMs reliability first-hand when in 1970 the crew of Apollo 13 reported, Houston, weve had a problem. A Chinese immigrant, Lee took Kennedys space speeches to heart and pledged to help him send men to the Moon. I thought, This country is good to me. I have to do my best because of (Kennedys) challenge. I want to do something for my country, he said. Lee had spent two years in ROTC and toyed with joining the Army. But his advisors thought his skills could be put to better use. Because of my mechanical engineering (background), they said to do it the other way: Instead of going to the front and fight for the country, you can do that with your knowledge of systems and engineering. And thats what I did. Lee worked on developing the modules external and internal insulation, environmental controls, and heat transfer systems needed to protect the astronauts and instruments from the extreme temperatures on the moons surface and the heat generated by the vehicles engines. Photo: NASA The major challenge was trying to keep the LM as light as possible. Like other engineers working on different elements of the program, Lee and his colleagues tested and re-tested everything they designed and implemented until there was no question about its reliability. That work was put to test toward the end of May 1969 during the Apollo 10 manned mission to orbit the moon, a dry run for Apollo 11. An operational mistake by the astronauts almost caused the LM to crash on the moons surface, but the module itself performed flawlessly. That proved that this system we designed is working, and so we had confidence in the Apollo 11, Lee said. The LMs success didnt surprise Mike Lisa, who now leads the Cradle of Aviations volunteer program, given the amount of QA tests it underwent. Lisa signed onto Grumman in 1963 as an instrumentation engineer, a job that became so varied it was pathetic, he joked. His main duties, though, involved countless rounds of vibration, shock, and thermal vacuum tests to ensure the LMs different components could withstand the rigors of space travel. Every part had to be tested, he said. We knew what we had to achieve, and once we achieved that we had to go beyond it. Ross Bracco often went beyond. He worked on the LM mainly as a structural designer, as well as with the propulsion engineering group and the flight test department. One of his jobs was to design a panel to support tool components in one of the modules high-vibration areas. He decided an extremely thin but strong honeycomb structure would work best. While all of the modules components were designed to meet NASAs criteria, the Grumman engineers would often add on safety factors of 15, 20, or 30 percent. Bracco tried to hit 100 percent on his. I said, I dont want my design to hurt anybody. I want to make sure these fellows had the opportunity to come home safely. So I designed a much higher safety factor on my own. Despite the confidence built through those redundancies and extra steps, the design teams still got nervous when NASAs QA inspectors visited Bethpage. They never knew what to expect. One day, the inspectors were examining the clean room where much of the LM was assembled. All of a sudden they announced they were shutting things down and made everyone leave the room. It turned out an inspector had found a discarded piece of chewing gum on the floor of the LM. What precipitated was this incredible inspection that locked down production for almost a week, Lisa said. That type of QA, though, helped save lives of the Apollo 13 crew when a spark from an exposed wire in the Odyssey CSM caused an oxygen tank to explode, shutting off power to it. The crew squeezed into the Aquarius LM, built for only two people and not designed for re-entry, using it for life support and propulsion. Lee had just gotten home after a 12-hour shift working in mission support area and was watching TV when his boss called. We have a problem, he told Lee. Get back here. Lee went back and with his team consulted on how to reduce the power usage of the Aquarius and monitor the temperatures inside of it to get the astronauts safely back to earth. We were able to do that, he said. Lee, along with Philip Jacknis, a 44-year ASME member and past chair of the Long Island section, served on the societys nominating committee that designated the LM a national historic mechanical engineering landmark in 2002. It really was an iconic engineering feat, said Jacknis, who had worked at Grumman for three summers beginning in 1966, keeping track of and distributing technical documents while studying mechanical engineering at The Cooper Union. He worked at the company for 44 years. It underscores the saying form follows function it led to a very creative design. One Giant Leap Harry Armen, past president of ASME, remembers the spirit of cooperation that fueled that creative, can-do engineering spirit that gave life to the entire Apollo program. He calls the time the golden age of engineering, with the LM as one of its crown jewels. He started at Grumman as an intern in the summer of 1962 and retired as the companys chief technologist 42 years later. During the Apollo program, Armen worked in the research department where he provided answers and solutions related to finite structural analysis, soil mechanics, aerodynamics, all types of optimization techniques, and shell theory for thin-walled construction, to name a few. It just went on and on, he said. The engineers also relied on new mainframe computers and punch cards to solve large-scale equations simultaneously and quickly. That was a remarkable development, he said. But Armen and other engineers across the country had access to something more remarkable than high-speed computers: engineering talent. Anywhere you looked in the company you could find someone who would help you. Experts came of the woodwork. There wasnt a technical question you couldnt get an answer for. People would drop what they were doing to solve your problem, Armen said. There was so much excitement at Grumman, the juices were flowing. Frank Moskal, a mechanical engineer who focused on machine design and stress analysis after graduating from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, experienced the same cooperation and solidarity across the country at North American Aviation in Downey, Calif., where the CSM and Saturn Vs second stage were built. I felt very inadequate because USC taught theory, not practical things. But the people I worked with were so good. Almost everyone had a specialty, he said. It was a great experience because you learned so much from the mature engineers. Many of the engineers working on the program faced similar situations as the young engineers today who must develop cross-disciplinary skills to perform jobs transformed by new technologies. Moskal found himself working with cutting-edge technologies and systems that veered greatly from his core training. He learned computer skills, statistical analysis, and computerized welding. He worked with printed circuitry, early CAD systems, and resistive inks. The government was investing in its scientific talent at that time. It was sort of like a national treasure, he said. You felt like you were heavily valued. That feeling prevailed until the Apollo program ended, and tens of thousands of engineers were laid off. It was awful, Armen said. One day you were working on the LM and the next day you were selling hotdogs on the street. Despite long hours, tremendous stress, and painful layoffs, something far greater remained for everyone involved. And thats something engineers around the world will remember 50 years from now. The idea of sending someone to the Moon was something we all dreamed about ever since the first time anyone looked up and saw it in the sky, Armen said. You were part of that. It was the pride in doing something noble.

The Five Stages of a Project The Five Stages of a Project While some project methodologies such as agile approaches compress or repeat the following stages in faster, iterative cycles, the work of each stage is visible and distinct in every project.   Formal Projects Follow a Five Stage Process as Follows Initiation: project team formation, project chartering and kick-off.  Planning: finalizing the project scope, defining the detailed work breakdown, assessing risk, identifying resource requirements, finalizing the schedule and preparing for the actual work.Execution: performing the actual work required by the project definition and scope.Monitor and Control: the actual management, reporting, and control of the resources and budgets during the execution phase.Project Close: delivery of the project, assessment of lessons learned, adjournment of the project team. Traditional Project Flow Regardless of the size of the project, the movement through the stages is the same. The project is initiated or kicked-off with a charter that identifies the project manager and describes the projects importance.   Once the project has been initiated, it moves to the planning phase. Here, the core and work teams identify the necessary work to be completed to achieve the project scope and develop estimates and assessments for time, costs, resources, and risks. After the planning phase, the work begins and occurs in a defined order necessary to move from a predecessor or preceding activities to successor activities. Project dependencies play an important role in this phase.   While the execution is proceeding the project manager and team members monitor, report on and control the overall project, with emphasis on critical path activities. This work continues until the execution phase is complete and the project is delivered to the customer.   The final phase, project close, involves wrapping up the delivery, assessing lessons learned and adjourning the project team so that members can move on to their next initiative.   For agile or iterative development-type projects, planning and execution take place in short spurts or sprints, with the stages repeating until the project is completed to the customers satisfaction.   Initiation A solid project initiation will not only set your project up for success, but it will also lay the groundwork for all future stages. During initiation, youll get the project team members assigned, brief them on the overall project goals and ask the client or project owner as many questions as possible so you can plan the project efficiently. It is also a great time to build team enthusiasm about the project and collect any last minute details that might influence project planning. Additional steps include: Stakeholder analysisAssignment of an executive sponsorCharter document development and communicationFormal kick-off meeting Planning Once youve initiated the project and gathered all relevant information, youll then begin planning your project. The planning stage depends on the size of your project, how much information you have to organize and how large your team is. The result of planning should be a clear project plan or schedule, from which everyone will follow their assigned tasks. Using a project-planning program such as Microsoft Project or Basecamp is extremely helpful when planning a project. If you dont have access to one of these programs, do a general search online for free project planning software. Even though using a project-planning program is helpful, its not always necessary. Using Excel and Word to create your plan and communicate it to the team is equally as effective. Specific tasks in the planning phase include: Creating a communication plan for the various stakeholders involved.Developing a detailed work breakdown structure.Identifying the critical path.Plotting resources on the project plan and refining the sequencing of the work based on project dependencies and resource constraints.Developing a detailed schedule.Assessing risks and developing a risk prioritization and mitigation plan.   Execution Now that you have a solid project plan, the team can begin executing the project against their assigned tasks. It is the stage where everyone starts doing the work. Youll want to officially kick-off the execution stage with in-person meetings to ensure everyone has what they need to begin executing their part of the project. Getting the team started on the right track is integral to a projects success, so articulate the schedule and communications plan clearly.   Monitor and Control While the project is in the execution stage, youll begin monitoring and controlling it to ensure its moving along as planned. There are a variety of ways you can monitor and control a project. Casual check-ins with team leaders, organized daily stand-ups, or more formal weekly status meetings are effective. The information that comes out of these meetings or communication channels will inform the feedback loop and ultimately any re-planning and adjustments that are necessary to the project. Additional important activities in this stage include: Adhering to your pre-established communication plan to ensure stakeholder awareness of the project status.Monitoring work teams and work activities on the critical path.Identifying opportunities to improve schedule performance by fast-tracking or completing activities in parallel or where necessary, crashing the schedule by adding resources.Monitoring actual versus planned costs.In some cases, monitoring, calculating and reporting on earned value for the project plan.Monitor and mitigating risks and refining the risk plan as needed. Project Close Once all the details and tasks of your project are complete and approved by the client or project owner; you can finally close your project. The closing of a project is just as important as its initiation, planning, and execution. Youll want to document all the information from the project and organize it neatly so you can go back to it if necessary. It is also a good time to hold a post-mortem on the project so all team members can reflect on what went right, or wrong during the project. It should also be documented so the outcome can be shared with other project members and filed in a project history folder. Finally, it is important to formally adjourn the project team, providing feedback and performance evaluations as indicated by your firms policy.

Simply Hired Releases March Employment Outlook Simply Hired Releases March Employment Outlook Today,  Simply Hired ® released its  March 2014 U.S. Employment Outlook  report. In February it found job openings nationwide increased 4.6% and were up 25.8% compared to the same time last year.  Nearly all industries posted growth in job openings (17 out of 18 industries), with legal (29.1%) and travel (20.3%) showing the largest gains. “Based on our data, job seekers who have or who can acquire the required skill sets have a growing set of opportunities for employment. We are optimistic about the employment market heading into spring,” said James Beriker, CEO of Simply Hired. Overall job openings increased in 17 out of 18 industries in February 2014.  Nearly all occupation categories (20 out of 23) experienced growth in job openings with building and groundskeeper (16.6%) and military personnel (15.8%) roles showing the largest gains. Healthcare  continued to be the  top posting industry with more than one-third of jobs coming from healthcare-related companies.
